As I mentioned in a previous posting, my Mother used to weave beautiful baskets as a hobby. As you know, baskets are a big part of the Easter season. I remember my own Easter basket when I was a child filled with candy and maybe a plush Easter bunny or toy. How excited I was on Easter morning to wake up and find a lovely filled basket that was wrapped in colored cellophane paper and tied with a bow. I also have fond memories of coloring eggs and, of course, Easter egg hunts. Then, there was always the "Easter dress" complete with little gloves and a hat for Church on Easter Sunday. When you have great memories as a child of a holiday, you love to repeat that with your children....recreating the special things your parents did for you.
When my two sons were young, my Mother made each of them a very special Easter basket. She dyed the reed she used to hand-make these baskets pretty pastel colors...light blue, light pink, white. Her loving hands carefully wove an Easter basket for both my sons...very identical in style. Each basket was a Grandmother's labor of love for her Grandsons.
Each Easter, I filled each of these baskets with colored grass, candy, toys and plush rabbits for each of my sons. I carefully wrapped each one with colored cellophane and tied ribbon at the top....just as my Mother had done for me when I was a child. Although my children are both adults now, I still fill these baskets for them if they come to celebrate Easter with me. I fill them with treats that they love and a little gift or two. A basket filled with love...
Every Easter, I put the Easter baskets my Mother made out on the mantel of the antique fireplace that I inherited from my parents. I love these baskets and treasure them. I love to see them in my home on display each Easter. The bow my Mother made and tied to the basket still hangs from it today....years later.
I keep most of the baskets I have from my Mother on display, but these special little Easter baskets are safely stored away until Easter time each year. I love seeing them each year at Easter and remembering all the love my Mother put into each one. In a special way, she becomes a part of our Easter each year. One day, I will pass these baskets on to my sons. I hope they will use them for their children some day. My Mother would have liked that...
This year, I put my two Muffy Vanderbilt Bears in their Easter outfits in the baskets. They look so cute there...
Here are a few more photos of the mantel with the basket decor.
I also have a couple of Easter Longaberger baskets that I display. This one has a pink glass hen that fits into the basket.
Thank you, Mom, for weaving these beautiful Easter baskets for your Grandsons and for helping to give them some wonderful Easter memories. Thinking of you Mom and Dad at Easter time...
Hope everyone has a beautiful day today and wonderful upcoming Easter with those that you love.... Remember at Easter time that God loves you and so do I... Have a happy day! xoxo Kim
